1. Renovating the Backyard – $19,000

Guests at the Boulder Guest House enter their rooms from the backyard, so this area forms their first impression. The brick walkway had been suffering from a serious drainage problem for years (similar to the central courtyard, which we repaired two years ago), and the lawn and planters needed a facelift. The condition of the backyard made renovation unavoidable since ongoing competition with larger hotels makes it essential to keep our space well-maintained and welcoming.

The work needed to take place during the summer months. To move forward, we temporarily drew on our reserve—and now we are asking the community to help replenish those resources. The renovation not only addresses a long-standing infrastructure issue but also safeguards one of our most important revenue streams.

2. Sharing the Practice More Widely – $7,000

After five years of building a robust program, we are now ready to reach more people who are seeking a reliable place to practice. The focus now is on increasing visibility and improving the pathways by which new practitioners can find their way to BZC.

We have already begun partnering with Dharma Gates, an organization that facilitates practice opportunities for young people at no cost. In the coming year, we plan to collaborate with a media expert to develop a comprehensive communications plan that will help us cultivate our online presence and make our programs easier to find—both in Boulder and online.

This includes upgrading our digital platforms, strengthening our social channels, continuing the development of our self-paced resources, and improving the experience of practitioners who practice with us remotely.

3. Remodeling the Main House Event Space – $8,000

Our historic building in the heart of Boulder is beautiful—but our practice spaces are quite limited. To better accommodate formal oryoki meals, community gatherings, and seminars, we plan to remove the non-load-bearing wall that separates the living and dining rooms. This simple renovation will create a larger, more flexible events space. It is a small change with a big impact on our capacity to practice and gather together.

Your support has shaped Boulder Zen Center into what it is today. As we look to 2026 and beyond, we invite you to help us strengthen what we have built and widen the circle of practice.

If you are able, please join this year’s fundraising effort with a financial contribution. Your offering—of any size—directly supports these three essential projects and affirms the importance of an accessible Zen Center where we come together in grounded presence and mutually supportive human connection.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed thus far!
